STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF HER WORSHIP HAZEL MCCALLION

(February 14, 1921 – January 29, 2022)

Her Worship Hazel McCallion was a trailblazer who continuously exceeded expectations as a leader for the people of Mississauga and her loved ones. As one of the longest-standing mayors in Canada (stretching to 36 years), she built up Mississauga from a small city in the suburbs to a big metropolis that is nationally recognized.

Hazel joined the WoundPedia Board of Directors in 2019 and had an immense passion for improving skin and wound care education for many people. She actively participated in the development of our wound care projects and proactively supported ECHO Ontario Skin and Wound to improve health care across the province. It was an immense honour to have Her Worship Hazel McCallion be part of our board of directors. To the public, she was known as “Hurricane Hazel” because of her bold actions and iron will. To those who knew her, Hazel had a witty, vibrant personality that will be sorely missed.

Her Worship Hazel McCallion passed away at the age of 101. Our thoughts are with her family and Fran Rider, her dedicated friend and fellow WoundPedia Board member. We were fortunate and grateful for the time spent with Hazel and will endlessly work towards honouring her memory.
